ME: Hi Don, it’s nice to have you here, can you kindly introduce yourself to our readers.
Don: I’m Don Caprio, a blogger and a web designer.
Me: I have known you for a while now & I know you are a great Blogger & SEO Enthusiast; how did you get into the Blogging business?
Don: I started blogging initially because I wanted to make money online. That was what got me started way back in 2009.
Me: To start with, what is SEO?
Don: Simply put, SEO means optimizing your website to rank better on search engine results page. Search Engine Optimization are those things you do to put your site in a better position when people run search queries relating to your target keywords.
Me: what are the various aspects of SEO?
Don: It depends on how you look at it: there’s on-page SEO and there’s off-page SEO. On the other hand, we’ve got white hate SEO and black hat Seacrh Engine Optimization.
Off-Page SEO, also referred to as off-site SEO, is the optimization you do outside your website. On-Page SEO (also called On-Site SEO) is the optimization you do right on your website or blog.
Me: Is SEO Important and why?
Don: Your biggest source of free traffic remains search engines and that can’t be disputed. If you’re really concerned about targeted traffic that leads to a very high conversion rate, you should take SEO very seriously.
Me: Which is more important between On-page SEO & Off-page SEO?
Don: Both are equally important but personally, I think on-page SEO is the most interesting. Proper on-page SEO with great content and a little off-page SEO does magic.
Me: Do you do Image SEO?
Don: Of course, I do.
Me: if yes, can you share some of your image SEO techniques with us?
Don: Well, there isn’t much to image Search Engine Optimization. Normally, you’re supposed to name your image properly instead of having stuffs like image001, image002, etc. And more importantly, using a descriptive alt tag shouldn’t be overlooked.

Me: what is your take on premium SEO plugins for WP bloggers?
Don: They are needed and I do recommend them.
Me: Does a page/blog design have any impact on search engine rankings?
Don: Yes, it matters a lot. Take for instance, having blocking ads that pushes your content down the page doesn’t only pisses readers off, search engines may as well penalize you for not having enough content above the fold.
Proper design and easy navigation is important for on-page SEO among other things. Resource hungry widgets and page elements too have negative effect on your page load speed which adversely affects your ranking.
Me: In Brief, can you explain the most important aspects of On-page SEO?
Don: I wish I could touch every aspect of on-page Search Engine Optimization but I’ll try to mention just few of the important ones:
Me: How do I do On-page SEO?
Don: It’s easy but it goes beyond just writing quality articles daily. It’s all about making search engine bots fall in love with your content, design, navigation, and everything on your site.
Me: Briefly, can you explain the important aspects of off-page SEO?
Don: Basically, off-page SEO is all about building quality backlinks. It’s all about making your site have credibility and “respect.”
Me: How do I go about doing off-page SEO?
Don: There are certain things to do but the most important thing to keep in mind when building backlinks is that all you’re trying to do is to make your site look like an authority one to bots. For this reason, you can’t afford to gain backlinks from just anywhere.
It’s important to link your social profiles to your websites and keep them active. You can gain backlinks from business and local listings, classified ads and directories… premium directories I mean. Even if social social bookmarking sites and content curation services give you nofollow backlinks, it’s still okay to have your links appear in those places when you create new posts.
You can build quality backlinks from quality guest posting, Q & A websites like Yahoo Answers and Quora and so on.
Also, submit your sitemap to as many search engines as you can find.
Me: Are XML sitemaps important and why?
Don: XML sitemaps are important. Having one is like giving a search engine bot a map of your website. It lets search engine bots better crawl your site and find inner pages that might not have been discoverable without a sitemap.
Me: what is your favorite or secret recipe for getting better search engine rankings?
Don: There’s no secret recipe apart from doing the right thing. Making sure proper SEO guidelines are followed.
Me: What are the basic things you think everyone should know about SEO?
Don: There’s a misconception about Search Engine Optimization I think we all should know. No matter how much backlinks you have and how tight your on-page SEO is, it all comes to nothing without quality content that can be shared and used as reference.
Me: From your experience, does domain name have any impact on rankings?
Don: Well, technically, yes. But I can still say no. It depends on how you look at it. Search engines may not really care about your domain name but people do. Your visitors do.
Search engines are getting smarter and behaving more like human; that’s why it’s important to keep your human readers in mind when it comes to everything you do on your website.
I changed my domain primary domain name from doncaprio.com to Geek.NG because of this and I’ve been seeing positive results lately; I’ve been getting a higher CTR on SERP.
Me: On-page or Off-page SEO, which do you love doing and why?
Don: Like I mentioned earlier, I prefer on-page SEO because it’s interesting and very practical.
Me: how important is keyword research?
Don: If you just keep writing random stuffs without actually knowing those keywords people are searching for and you’re hoping to rank high on SERP, you may be on a wild goose chase. That’s why keyword research can’t be overemphasized.
Me: Do you do keyword research? If yes, any tips on how to go about it?
Don: Of course, I do. We all probably know about using Google Adword keyword tool and I’m not gonna try to explain how that works or how to use it. If you already have contents on your site, you should try to analyze those keywords bringing in visitors.
Those keywords can actually give birth to new post ideas that can rank better than previous posts.
Me: What is your opinion about all these Random Google updates? (I find them disgusting)
Don: These updates would’ve been great if only they affect sites doing things wrong but in a lot of cases, even websites doing everything right get impacted negatively by these updates. As described by you, they’re disgusting and make Google look irresponsible.
Me: Do permalinks matter in SEO?
Don: Yes, experts have always said they should contain relevant keywords.
Me: What SEO Advice do you have for Bloggers and Webmasters reading this Chat?
Don: No matter how tempting it looks, never buy backlinks and never use automated SEO software programs to build links. I’ve been there and the result wasn’t that nice.
Me: Which SEO blogs do you love reading and recommend?
Me: What Link Building Methods are you using and working right now?
Don: Right now, I’m not focusing on building backlinks, I’m more inclined towards earning them. I try to create tutorials that can be used as reference in forums and Q&A websites. Checking my daily stats, I always get referrals from high ranking forums, Yahoo answers and other sites though I’m not really active on these websites.
ME: To finish off, how can our readers connect with you?
Don: You can contact me on Twitter (@doncaprio), Facebook (/doncaprio2) and Google+ (+DonCaprioDC).
